SERBIA-HOMEOPATHIC HISTORY

There is not much to be told about homeopathic
history in Serbia. After liberation of Serbia in the beginning of
XX century from Turkish
occupation, various Serbian doctors educated in Austria or Germany
took the post of state, military or district physicians, but Homeopathy
was virtually unknown possibly because of the strong opponent view
of these foreign Faculties toward “New School”, the view
which was impressed into all graduates. There is still unproved opinion
that the first Serbian doctor who used homeopathic treatment was
great physician and neurologist Dr. Lazarevic. There was no place
as well upon the newly constituted Medical Faculty in Belgrade in
1932 year for the same reason. Reading the classical textbook “Infective
diseases” written in 50ties by our eminent professor K. Todorovic,
especially chapters about Smallpox, Cholera, Difteria and Flue, it
can be observed that this author was acquainted with Homeopathy,
but did not dare to declare it. Hoemopathy was adequately mentioned
in the textbook of Pharmacognosia by professor Tucakov as a method
of using plant remedies. The state health and educational organizations
and offices did not support Homeopathy.
At the end of the XX century
after retreat of communism from Serbia, better communication with
Western World opened a space for new interest.
The author
of this report published in 1993 first newspaper articles about what is Homeopathy,
hold several public lectures about this method of treatment and in 1995 printed
first book for physicians in Serbian language about Homeopathy, entitled “First
Handbook of Homeopathy”. The work of spreading the knowledge of Homeopathy
was stopped because of unstable political circumstances and civil wars in
this region in the last decade of XX century, and further education of physicians
went disorganized. It was in 2000, that in Novi Sad, with the help of London
Institute of Classical Homeopathy and international financial support first
School of Classical Homeopathy has been started and Homeopathic Association
for Classical Homeopathy “Hahnemann” has been founded. In 2002
the author of this report succeeded to establish the Section for Homeopathy
of Serbian Medical Society, which has now 40 members, physicians pharmacists
and dental surgeons. All members achieved some homeopathic education over
the school in Novi Sad, or from abroad, mostly from England, Russia, and
Germany.
Legal status of Hoemopathy started to improve. In
December 2005, the new Law on Health Service, and the new Law on
Medical Products and Appliances
has been
voted by Assembly, so Homeopathy became legal method of treatment, but
some additional regulative rules about Homeopathy like educational
standards,
licences etc. are to be officially adopted by Health Authorities. This
year first 6
Homeopathic remedies have been registrated by State Comission for Medical
Products, and homeopathic remedies are included in our VI National Pharmacopoeia.
In
2004 and 2005, in organization of Section for Hoemopathy of Serbian Medical
Society, with the help of Central German Society of Homeopathic Physicians
(DZVhAE), and included in the system of Continuos Medical Education of
Medical Faculty Belgrade, two standard courses (A and B) according
to the program
of DZVhAE were held with 70 participants. The overall interest for Homeopathy
in this country is growing. From 2002, Section for Homeopathy of Serbian
medical
Society is member of LMHI and ECH, and Homeopathic Association from Novi
Sad is collective member of ECCH. Still there is not national school of
Homeopathy in this country, and it is our task to found it.
In
this moment I can not name any “Outstanding
Homeopaths” in this
country, but most of our members, physicians educated in Hoemopathy, are
working seriously and honestly in their practice, trying their
best to help the patients
and to approve the value of Homeopathy. Our Sections holds regular scientific
meetings, and both organizations are engaged in organizing educational
seminars fith foreign lecturers.
Until recently, there was only
one Homeopathic Pharmacy, in Belgrade, and recently the second
one, private Pharmacy in Novi Sad has been opened where
these remedies
are partly produced according to DHU standards and partly imported; in
this way the great problem in obtaining reliable homoeopathic remedies
is partly
solved.
